#How to install linux on an external hard drive install#
I originally wanted to use about 30-40 gigs of my external hdd to install ubuntu in and use it as a plug and play drive, but this was not easy There have already been proposed two approaches without dual-boot config (boot Ubuntu live image / stick, WSL2) for allowing access to these 600 GB of data (and backup of these 600 GB of data) without setting up dual-boot. And if you want to make a backup of your 600 GB of data, you don't need a dual-boot system. If you don't want to make a backup of your 600 GB of data, then this data seems not to be important as loss of these is considered acceptable by you. You didn't mention what would prevent you of renting or buying such equipment nor subscription. If you don't have any such devices nor subscriptions, you may rent or buy such devices or subscriptions. A backup may reside on another disk, another tape, another private or public cloud storage, (another set of DVDs,) another NAS, another JBOD. Another drive on same disk is not a backup. I can't backup 600 gigs of data as I don't have another drive. Such an external reference can be an external direct attached storage (DAS) like an external hard disk or some external JBOD attached directly, or it could also be an external boot server or external NAS. Or do you want to have a single boot system with one boot config with one operating system on internal boot disk and another boot system with one different boot config with one Ubuntu version on external disk?Ī dual-boot system is a system with different operating systems on either internal disks or on same external reference with no internal boot system.

Welcome to Spiceworks and its community, a communiy of IT professionals for IT professionals with a focus on SME. If I don't find a way out, I'll have to erase my drive. I really don't want to erase my data, but I really need that linux installed asap. It says that proceeding will erase the drive and I'll be responsible for erasing the data. Upon clicking okay, it shows me another warning, stating that the drive contains multiple partitions that aren't listed or even visible from windows (The partition is actually visible in This PC). I created a partition on my hdd (30 gigs) using windows disk management and tried to use rufus to burn the os onto that partition, however, rufus is unable to detect partitions on the drive and when I select the drive, it says that all data on drive will be destroyed. I tried following a couple of guides, but they all use empty drives. I originally wanted to use about 30-40 gigs of my external hdd to install ubuntu in and use it as a plug and play drive, but this was not easy, so I decided to instead dual boot my laptop.
